After matric, 1950 he spent a very short spell at UCT and then worked at several places. He first worked for Old Mutual and not liking it he left them and found work at the SABC. His job was to monitor calls complaining about breaks in transmission of radio programmes and then having to climb the radio mast at Brakenfell to make adjustments to the transmitters for the SABC.  This is where he met his life-long friend Vernon who taught him about transistors etc etc so that Charles could make a radio which he did when we were married (3 April 1961). Charles also later made an amplifier so he could listen to his classical music which was a big part of his life. 

He joined Civil Service at the Surveyor General’s office in Mowbray, Cape Town. Transferred to Pretoria 1963 to Dept. Lands and stayed there til retirement in 1992. 

Charles registered with UNISA in about 1970 and completed a B.A. degree majoring in History and English.

He was a perfectionist so anything he tackled took a long time to complete! Wasn’t much of a handyman but managed most things as long as I wasn’t in a hurry! 

A really good mechanic thanks to Uncle Ted and he did all our maintenance and repairs on the various cars we had. His idea of retirement was to do nothing, so he enjoyed it until illness overtook him. 

Charles passed away on 31 October 2010 and his life is comemorated on the Wall-Of-Rememberance in Sedgefield, South Africa
