As a school teacher, organist, parish clerk or sexton and therefore literate, Jacob Fredricks begins to use the surname Havincks in several official documents and contracts in Scheemda on 18 Aug 1660 and 8 Jan 1661. As such he and his wife are broadly considered to be the originators of the surname Havinga.

Harm Sibolts Havinga departed from Beerta in Oldambt, Netherlands as a soldier in the employ of the Dutch East India Company (V.O.C.) in 1750. He was later employed as Town Crier in Stellenbosch in 1755 by Barend Gildhuisen. Following this he became a farmer in the Stellenbosch area. Shortly thereafter the surname Havinga was changed to Havenga.
